40 traps also, and David collected a L. boylii and a
Reithrodontomys sp.
0930 hrs. After breakfast. We will spend some time here
organizing the vehicle and taking care of the live
animals. Several (7) L. gymnotis died (of the cold) during
the night as did 2 P. mexicanus. In addition several
P. boylii died in the traps. We take tissue on the
gymnotis, and some boylii.
11:15 hrs Ready to break camp. We will drive down into San
Cristobal to purchase supplies.
13:10 hrs No extra at any gasoline stations. We must now
drive to Tuxtla. We plan to drive as far as possible
toward Teapa and Villa Hermosa, Tabasco. This
afternoon. Hopefully we will reach some Nectomys
collecting localities around Rayon, Chiapas.
14:20 hrs No extra in Tuxtla. Had to purchase a tankful
of nova.
16:35 hrs. Stopped to set traps at an area of mature
habitat and a place to pull off as well (on gravel
hill). There is a mixture of pines and oak and much
undergrowth. The locality is
17:35 hrs Completed setting out 40 sherman. The pine trees
on the hillsides surrounding the campsite on the gravel
hill are actually few and far between. The forest
is well thinned out, leaving a lot of vines, secondary
