I took a ride on a truck (40 pesos) down to Motozintla.
A man from Mexico City on the bus helped me find
a mechanic. (11:00 hrs). He said to come back in three
hours and we would go up the mountain. David and
Ed stayed behind to watch the car. While waiting I
purchased some supplies.
1530 hrs. As I left with the mechanic and two helpers who
had driven as far as the outskirts of town, I saw
Ed and David in the truck. They explained that just
after I had left in the truck another vehicle drove
up and had jumper cables and were able to start
the overyall. (A previous attempt had failed). Ed had
looked for me in town but had not found me, leaving
David on the outskirts in case I drove by. They were
just turning around to go and check traps when they saw
us coming.
1610 hrs Arrived at second trapping locality (12.6 mi by road) Motozintla de Mendoza; Cerro Mozotal.
1655 hrs Finished checking these traps which were set on a very
steep hillside. I collected 2 P. boylei, and 1 Neotoma
mexicana T and 2 P. guatemalensis, and David 1 P. boylei
and 1 N. mexicana (out of 20 traps each). Several of
the mice collected in the morning are dead so I
put them on ice and will take tissues later. This
locality consists of mixed pine and deciduous trees,
with bunch grass and moderate undergrowth.
1825 hrs Completed checking traps at highest elev (2800m)
