Duke S. Rogers 1980 Journal 6 10:25 hrs mi. 37.4 Passed through town of Beligario Domnguez. The forest appears to be somewhat dryer. The rainforest is still patchy, intermixed with introduced fruit and grain crops. 10:35 hrs mi. 42.1 elev. 900 m. Sighted first pine and oak. Not very pristine, a lot of agricultural and lumbering disturbance. The road is fairly good, but is not paved most of the time. 10:55 hrs mi 49.5 Town of El Rosario, 1600 m. elev. This is at the summit of a small range of mountains. Completely denuded. Down below there is a town, probably Motozintla mi 56.2 elev. 1200 m. Town of Motozintla. To the northwest there is a tall mountain, hopefully Mojotol! There is a road that skirts the town which we will take in hopes of finding a road up the mountain. 11:10 hrs mi 56.2 Motozintla Mazapa 1050 m. We must have come too far as this road (very good, paved) is heading towards Guatemala. 11:30 hrs. Have driven into downtown Motozintla, and asked direction as to the whereabouts of a road. Here the people do refer to the mountain as Cerro Mojotol. Apparently there is a "ugly" but passable road for a truck or carryall type vehicle. 13:30 hrs mi. 90.4 have driven up to top of mountain where there is a telecommunications installation in ill repair. The last mile of road is good cloud forest. Pine and oak with many bromeliads. We gave a ride to a person who lives in El Barvenir (take right fork of road at mileage 89.5 to this locality).
