Duke Rogers 1982 Journal (37) This area is also located on the right hand side of the road when driving away from San Loidro and is a much smaller patch of forest (although more mature) than the first site. The area is also fairly flat once you climb up the side on the roadsides. This area has more fallen logs, thicker leaf litter, greater amount of understory and in general larger trees composing the canopy. I set 40 traps there and Ed 30. At the first site I set 60 and so did Ed. 5 August (Thursday) 0630 hrs Arose, dressed, got our gear together, and went down to eat breakfast. 0930 hrs Completed checking both localities. From the first site (16.3 kms) I caught one Heteromyids and a Proechimys. Ed caught only one armadillo - but it was a Heteromys. Both heteromys were juveniles - The one I collected one of the smallest I have ever trapped (perhaps the smallest or youngest). From the second locale Ed collected one Oryzomyid and a Proechimys. I caught 14 animals including 12 Oryzomyids (2 or 3 species) and 2 Proechimys, but no Heteromys. One of the Oryzomyids was dead in the trap; I suspect due to ants as they were all over the animal and several other mice in traps were fending off ants. 1230 hrs We are in route to the San Vito area, located near the Panamanian border. Just passed through Palmer Sur. I have several localities along the road to San Vito (this 16 out of Villa Nelly).
