Derek Rogers 1982 Journal (24) Later this morning we plan to drive to Tilaran and try to catch additional Heteromys. We still have six remaining alive, but we must move if possible. 1230 hrs Completed checking out of hotel. 1440 hrs Arrived at trap sight (4.1 km NE beyond) Tilaran, 650m) I set 80 traps in the same area (to the left when driving NE) and Ed and Phil set out 30 and 40 traps respectively. 1535 hrs Drove back into Tilaran, then about 0.4 km out of town to set some traps in a brushy, secondary growth area. We hope to catch either Oryzomys or Sigmodon here. 1830 hrs Arrived back at our hotel (#180) - very nice. 2300 hrs Turned in after a few beers. 26 July (Monday) 0655hrs Arose, dressed, and quickly left for trap site 0850 hrs. I caught nothing at the (0.4 km N Tilisan local), nor did Phil, but Ed did catch 1 hisomys with some another locality. It has been raining intermittently (but very hard) all night and the traps set in the secondary growth were exposed and probably the rodent activity here was diminished. Of the 80 traps I set in the forest at the 4.1 mi NE Tilaran local I caught 5 Heteromys and one Oryzomys fulvescens. Ed caught 4 Heteromys and Phil 1. 1030 hrs Drove to Canas and stopped for breakfast. We plan to drive to San Jose today, stop off to see if it is OK to karyotype tomorrow, then either set traps near the University or drive somewhere nearby and trap for hisomys.
