choices at signs or intersections for feist Heredia when in San Jose, then for Alajuela until the Queerpuerto El Coco, then for signs for the Fronteria Nicaragua. Past Alajuela the road becomes "1". We continued on this road until reaching the town of Las Cañas, then took route 19 towards Tilán, stopping at three places to trap (see next day's meter for mileages or later entry. The weather is warm, partly cloudy; we can see Volcán Arenal from the trapping site.
1820 hrs Completed setting 60 traps -- most of them are along an edge of the forest; ca 25 are in secondary growth in a pasture or in grass. The locality where Phil and I set our traps is 3.7 km NNE (by rd.) Cañan, @ 150 m, Prov. Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Ed's locality is 8 km NNE (by rd.) Cañan, 300 m, Prov. Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Phil set a total of 70 traps and Ed has set 60.
1830 hrs Drove into Cañan to eat supper.
1950 hrs Drove back out towards our trap sites and plan to camp between the two along a road which used to lead to an old bridge crossing an unnamed river (ca 6 km NNE Cañan), but now there is a new taller bridge. This afternoon when setting traps I saw a Potus flavus! Very beautiful animal. Phil say and we both heard howler monkeys as well. The 3.7 km locality description is as follows: The forest is not very dense, and there is only a patch of it on the left-hand side of the road when driving from Cañan toward Tilán.
