18 July (Sunday)
0630 hrs We ended up camping at the same place as last night (12.2 kms) up the road from our trapping site.
The weather last night was very foggy, but cleared at the higher elevation of our campsite (ca 3000 meters).
Several animals died last night and we will take tissue on them before leaving for our trapping locality.
0845 hrs I completed picking up the traps for my lines (ca 60 set in the forest and 30 set along the forest edge or in secondary growth.) I caught 10 animals (3 Scotinomys, 2 Reithrodonomys, and 5 Oryzomy's (several species). Ed collected 1 Metromys, 3 Reithrodentomys (creper?), 2 P. nudipes, and one Oryzomys. Phil caught 3 Metromys cresterus, 1 Reithro (creper) and 4 P. nudipes.
1000 hrs Several of the Metromys are doing poorly so we will stay here over prepare several more animals that are doing poorly while I karyotype the two cresterus. The weather was sunny, but now has begun to rain.
1200 hrs Completed karyotyping the animals. The hand centrifuge is begin to strip the gears after only 2 animals! It probably will not be useful for the remainder of the trip. We will drive until we find a restaurant and stop to eat. We were then drive to near Tres Rios and try to find good habitat for Metromys desmarestianus.
1340 hrs We have finished eating and are about 20 kms outside San José.
1630 hrs After driving on back roads south of Tres Rios
