Duke & Roger 1982 Journal 17 July (Saturday) (10) 0630 hrs. Wake up and dressed. We spent the night cramped in the VW. Phil left to sleep outside as he was too cramped in the front seat. Cloudy, temp. ca. 10°C. 0930 hrs. Ed and I have returned from collecting and have repacked some animals in other holding Sherman's to keep complete sets. I caught 16 animals (2 Scotinomys, 7 Reithrodontomys, 6 P. mudiiper, and one Heteromys). 1130 hrs Phil has some difficulties locating all his traps. He has returned but several are still missing even after searching for them for several hours. Ed caught six mice (1 Oryzomyx, 2 Reithrodentomys, 2 P. mudiiper, and a mustelid. Phil caught five mice (2 Oryzomyx, 1 Reithrodentomys, and 2 P. mudiiper). We plan to spent the next several hours preparing a series of mudiiper. Partly Cloudy, temp. 15°C, windy. 1500 hrs. Completed pulling tissue and preparing a series of P. mudiiper. Our plan is to set traps at the same locality again tonight, then move on regardless of whether or not we have taken any more Heteromys. I want to be damn sure I get the one individual we have karyotyped. We can always come back here and try to get some more at the end of the trip. We will probably work the locality given to us by Mark Hofner near Tres Rios for Heteromys for a few days, then head on in to San Jose to karyotype. 1700 hrs. Completed setting more traps in likely looking Heteromys habitat. Phil is back, we are waiting for Ed; then we will head down the road a way to get some warm coffee. It is and has been raining for the past 3 hours.
