Journal Tuesday 13 July
0400 hrs Arose from a bad night's sleep. Today I, along with two other students (Ed Neoke and Phil Bugloski, both students of Bill Haidicker) will fly to Costa Rica and spend about a month collecting rodents. The major goals of my work are to collect three species of heteromyids (Heteromys osteoerix, H. deamastianus, and Lonchops salvini). The former species occurs only in Costa Rica, and although I have samples of both the latter two species from Costa Rica, I hope to improve my samples and increase the geographic area represented. The other data I hope to collect will add to several ongoing studies dealing with Peromyscus and Reithrodontomys. Ed Neoke is accompanying me primarily to work in the tropics and to help me out. Phil Bugloski's work concerns developmental problems in heteromyid rodents - and he needs Heteromys and Lonchops embryos
0500 hrs Phil Bugloski and I arrived at the MVZ to bring our collecting equipment and personal gear down to be loaded into Tim Patton's VW bus (he is taking us to the airport).
0535 hrs Ed arrived by bicycle ca. 5 min after we did. We are all loaded and ready to go.
0618 hrs Arrive San Francisco Airport. Our flight goes to Dallas-Ft. Worth, then to Miami via American Airlines. We then change airlines and fly back to Costa Rica. Total round trip airfare (30 day max. excursion rate) is $ 675.00 per person.
