RIBBLE, D.O. 1990 Journal 2 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Feb 17 A few notes on habitat - the creek is low, but definitely running; grasses and forbs are green; willows are just beginning to bud. I looked but didn't see any bay laurel seeds. There are some buckeyes on the ground, but smaller and not nearly as abundant as last year. 2120h - out checking traps on PC. Pretty cloudy, ~40°, no moon. Although it's not raining, the drip from the trees seems like rain. In the middle of checking traps it rained moderately for 30 min. By the time I finished (2330h), it was clear again. Good capture results, but rather disappointing breeding activity. No radio-transmitters put out. Noticed ice on the porch of the Robinson House - must be colder than I thought! Feb 19 Snow!! During the night about ½-inch of snow fell covering the fields, roads, etc. Started checking traps on PC at 0600h. Still dark (flashlight necessary), although the eastern horizon is getting light. Amazing PC results - recaptured all but one PC from last night plus 5 new. Very few other species. Noticed lot Neotoma so about ear-tagging, etc. Finished by 0800h. Summary of Results: P. californicus 14 capt. 10 (Am) # ind 19 capt (new) 19 P. boylii 2'' 1'' 32 Desmopithus 4'' 4'' 4 Neotoma 0'' 2'' 2 SORRY TOTAL 1 mortality 0'' 1 TOTAL 21 captures 25 captures 28 ind.
