Peromyscus californicus Captive (map 3) Cage 5 Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif ♀ 1493 - offspring of ♀ 1441 ♂ 1476 - offspring of ♂ 1461 Feb 19 Introduced these two into 42 enclosure above. 1493 - 21g, immature 1476 - 33.5g, SAD, pelage. Feb 22 0400h - 21.5g, collected tissues March 4 Checked on animals on my way back to Berkeley today around noon. Mice in this cage and adjoining cage (1461-1412) had chewed through the partition and were mixed between the two sides. I put them back on the correct sides and tried to block the hole. March 9 Checked on animals this am and they had chewed through partition again - 1476♂ was huddled in the corner and his tail was swollen and chewed up. And couldn't find offspring of ♀[illegible]!! Found them dead in cage next day (see 1461 notes). Perhaps, 1476, being the only non-related mouse killed ♀'s babies and was subsequently attacked by the breeding male and/or female ?? I took 1476 out and put him in a plastic cage with food and water. March 13 1493 - 3.4g, SAD. cleaned cage. March 14 Tried again, put these two in a large plastic cage together. Put cage up in cabin inorder to keep an eye on them. April 3 1100h - cleaned cage 38.5g, SAD pelage. 38g, TD (barely). Tail still swollen, but appears fine.
