Remsen, J.V. 1977 Snow Bunting Ectophenax nivalis Nov.20 Monticello Dam, Yolo Co., Calif.: I seen along dirt path at the base of the dam (where found yesterday by Rich Stallcup) - studied for 20+ minutes from 6-30 ft in great light. An extremely tane bird centre of crown a duller brown that the rest of the crown Iris black Bill yellow with blackish tip on upper -> mandible buffy breast band. thighs well-feathered fluffy, white. arrow grayish postocular line crown, cheek patch, nape bright buffy-amber. (Some whitish streaks in crown) black streaks on back (not as conspicuous as drawn) on gray background, changing to buffy brown towards lower back. black primaries with some white edgings splashes of buffy along sides and flanks very long hallux black tarsis Although we arrived at 0745, the bird did not appear until 0900 when suddenly Mrs. Langham spotted it on a rock near the area which had been searched the most intensively of any - near where it had been seen yesterday. It flew into the middle of the group of birds and began feeding at their feet. The overall size was nearly that of a Brown Touhee. The contrast between the large head and the small bill gave the bird a very distinctive gestalt.
