Remsen, J.V. 1977 McCown's Longspur Rhynchophanes mccowni Oct.22 East Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co. Calif.: 1 with Horned Larks ~ 1 mi. S of Piute Gorge in extreme eastern Lanfair Valley in a barren, open, disturbed area. Trail appeared mostly white with a triangular black tip. Gave a rattle in flight similar to Lapland Longspur but higher-pitched and different in tone. On the ground appeared rather non-descript - no strong face pattern, mostly gray-brown. Oct.23 East Mojave Desert: 2 - same area.
