Clay-colored Sparrow
Spizella pallida
Sept. 5 Point Reyes, Marin Co., Calif: 1 in the valley to the
West of the cypress at Nunes Ranch, but before the
cattle pond, where it had been found yesterday. A
and slimmer
small sparrow, smaller than nearby Savannas, with a
long tail - typical Spizella shape. The breast was
a clear sandy-buff and the belly was whitish - no
gray at all; the triangular cheek patch was strong and
conspicuous; a gray wash formed a hind-collar which
contrasting with the rest of the sandy-brown upperparts.
The details of the crown were never seen clearly but the
buffy chest and strong cheek patch eliminate Brewers and
Chipping. Found 2 days ago by Binford and Parameters
Oct. 9 Point Reyes: 2 - 1 in draw w. of Nunes and 1 in lupines
LCB, VR
around pond at the "T" junction a few hundred yds. from
Nunes Ranch. Both birds had strong triangular cheek patches, no
line from eye to bill, pale streak through crown, gray collar
contrasting with sandy-brown back, and underparts too pale for
Chipping. Flight note softer than the metallic flight note of
Chipping
