Sharp-tailed Sparrow
Ammosppiza caudacutg
Nov. 19 Bolinas Lagoon, Marin Co. Calif: 1 in small (10'x 50')
patch of cattails along NW edge of the lagoon where found
a couple of days ago. A small, short-tailed sparrow roughly
the size and shape of a Grasshopper Sparrow but with a slimmer
bill. Crown: gray central stripe bordered by broad brown
stripes on either side Face: buffy-orange with gray, triangular
cheek patch; dark postocular stripe bordering cheek patch and
buff-orange eyebrow - the postocular stripe bent around the
corner of the cheek patch. Underparts: throat whitish,
breast washed with orange buff; some faint short streaks on
sides; belly + undertail coverts whitish. Back: 2 pairs of
str.ming white streaks converging towards the lower back;
a narrow gray collar separated back from head but the
collar was incomplete in the center of the back, Rest of
back brown - details of pattern not recorded. Wings: basically
brown, but details of the pattern not recorded. Tail: thin,
spindly, pointed. Seen well for about 10 seconds in
the tops of cattails at about 20' in good light and
once again in & similar conditions for about 2 seconds.
