Hepatic Tanager
Piranga flava
May 21 Clark Mountain, San Bernardino Co. Calif.: 1 singing ♂ in White Fir patch
May 27 East Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co. Calif.: 2 ♀♀ together at Ft. Piute. — orange-yellow crown and throat sharply defined from gray face; bill gray and large; underparts mostly grayish
June 20 East Mojave Desert: A pair was associating together closely in the white fir stand. They hung around the area most of 3 hrs. and seemed particularly interested in one large white fir. It is almost certain they are nesting or going to nest.
June 21 Kingston Mountains, San Bernardino Co. Calif.: 1 ♂ + 2 ♀♀ (♀♀ choosing each other) seen along ridge near Bare Area A and another ♂ seen along ridge near Bare Area B. These areas are pure pinyon — no white firs within a mile.
