Remsen, J.V. 1977 Painted Redstart Myioborus pictus June 20 East Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co. Calif.: 1 pair seen in the white fir stand in the New York Mtns. One bird was singing and displaying at the other bird - they seemed to be a pair. Conspicuous white outer 3-4 tail feathers and huge white shoulder patch; upperparts and head all black; breast bright red; belly white. Stayed in the white firs about 5 minutes and then were not seen again the following 2 hours of our stay there. They did not seem attached to the white fir stand but the steep, cool, rocky canyons here with lots of ledges and crevices seemed to be good breeding habitat. The song was typical-warblerlike in quality - a series of high pitched, sweet notes: "sew-sew-sew-sew seedle-seedle - see" One bird also gave a "chew" note resembling pine siskin flight call.
