Hooded Warbler
Wilsonia citring
Oct. 15 Forestville, Sonoma Co., Calif: 1 ♂ in denser riparian
thickets where it has been present for over one month. We
spent an hour and 45 min. here before finally seeing the
bird and then needed every minute until darkness to finally
get good looks. The underparts were all bright yellow and
the upperparts were greenish; the crown and nape were
blackish as was a well-defined blackish chest connected to
the crown by blackish "straps"; the throat was not black,
indicating an imm. male, and the black did not appear solid
black; white edging in the outer tail feathers was noted.
The call note was a high, sharp "chiiN", similar to
Brown Towhee call note but softer.
Oct. 22 East Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif: 1 ♂ in Chilopsis
wash ≈ ¼ mi. E of riparian at Fort Piute. Collected by
S. Cardiff - specimen to San Bernardino Co. Museum The high,
sharp "chiiN" note was heard. Imm. ♂ - greenish edgings
on black crown feathers.
