Remsen, J.V. 1977 Golden-winged Warbler Vermivora chrysoptera May 31 Oasis Ranch, Mono Co., Calif: I singing in row of poplars at W. edge of orchard. I was walking along the fence there when I heard three prolonged buzzy notes, the middle lower than the other two, and yelled out "Golden- winged or Blue-winged Warbler!" Everybody ran over quickly and Joe Morlan said the song belonged to Golden-winged. Then I saw it in the poplar and we all watched it for the next 15 minutes. It sang about once every 1-2 minutes. Description: Face pattern very striking and highly distinctive - broad gray-black face mask from lores broadening into auriculars, This mask was sharply bordered all around by white. The chin and throat were also grayish black, separated from the face mask by a broad white malar stream. The forecrown was brilliant golden yellow and the hindcrown was grayish. The rest of the upperparts were grayish except for a very large golden-yellow patch in the wings - very conspicuous. The underparts were whitish. Details of the tail were not noted. The bird foraged rather deliberately in dense foliage in poplars and cottonwoods from 20' to 75' above ground.
