Philadelphia Vireo
Vireo philadelphicus
Sept. 28 Point Reyes, Marin Co., Calif.: I in the low dense willows near the cypress trees at Drake's Beach where it had been found yesterday by Don Roberson, Joe Morlan, and Dick Erickson. Joe found the bird again first thing this morning but Linda and I got only brief looks at it before it disappeared. We returned a few hours later and found it in the cypress trees where we watched it intermittently for 5-10 minutes in poor light against the gray sky. But then it flew to the low willows where we had incredible views at eye level in good light from 15-40' away for 5-10 minutes - one of the best studies I've ever had of any vireo.
General appearance: a small, chunky vireo (hooked bill clearly seen), smaller and rounder than Warbling Vireo. I was very impressed with how round and chunky the bird was - more like Hutton's Vireo than Warbling Vireo in shape. Bill: seemed shorter and stumper than Warbling Vireo bill. Crown: Even gray Back: a dull green, contrasting with the gray crown and nape. Wings: very dark brownish gray with a faint pale wingbar and (barely visible) pale leading edge (yellowish-white). Tail: same color as wings; outer rectrices appeared pale-edged but it was not clear whether this was a product of the light or true color; tail seemed shorter than that of Warbling Vireo. Eye: indistinct pale superciliary, and an even less distinct
