May 21 East Mojave Desert, San Bernardino Co., Calif.: 1 seen hunting over open areas near oak grove in Caruthers Cyn; two persistent sounds in trees (like limb squeaking in wind) were suspected to be juveniles. A nest had been found here earlier this spring.
May 24 Klinefelter, San Bernardino Co., Calif.: 4 roosting in tamarisks. At dusk they gave the same "limb-in-the-wind" squeaking and 1) descended to ground under trees with much "head-bobbing" and head rotating. Jim Smith claims he counted 75 of these birds in the trees on March 28.
May 25 East Mojave Desert: 4 seen in Caruthers Cyn - 25 yds from May 21 observation.
