Remsen, J.V. 1977 Franklin's Gull Larus pipixican Nov. 16 LaMe Merced, San Francisca Co., Calif.: Imm. - found here yesterday by others. broken white eye-ring conspicuous The bird did not fly while we were watching it - it had become entangled in fishing line and was dragging along a floating cattail. Those who had seen it flying said there was a sharp black band on the tail and no white in wingtips - indicating immature. Also, although the back was smooth gray, the wing coverts were mottled with brown. No white could be seen in wingtips while sitting. The bill looked short, slim and stumpy - not long and slender like Laughing Gull.
