Remsen, J.V. 1977 Buff-breasted Sandpiper Tryngites subruficollis Sept. 6 Point Reyes (cont) [cont] bird its characteristic heavy-jowled appearance. We were also unable to see any eye-ring. We never heard the bird give any call note whatsoever -> they are characteri[sil] silent on the breeding grounds The bird spent all its time on extremely overgrazed pastureland, concentrating along the ridges and crests of the hills. It ignored the nearby cattle pond. There is no other sandpiper with the combination of clear buffy breast and bright yellow, long legs except perhaps Ruff which is larger, longer-billed, and shows distinctive white patches on sides of tail -> this bird's tail lacked any hint of white patches - the tail was seen clearly in flight several times - dark central stripe and paler brown laterally Found yesterday by Jerry Langham and Ed Greaves (Sacramento); seen today by myself and John Luther, James Wolstencroft, Linda Hale, Vickie Dziadosz, Bud Fry, Alice Mericourt, Clarence Smith
