Remsen, J.V. 1977 Wilson's Plover Charadrius wilsonia June 29 McGrath State Beach, Ventura Co., Calif: I feeding on pools in mudflats in SE corner of the expanse of mud. It was found here June 27 by Larry Ballard. This is the third California record and the first since 1918[19]24. We watched the bird for nearly an hour, during which it fed along the edges of pools on the mudflats, foraging slowly and deliberately in contrast to the more rapid movements of Snowys and a Semipalmated Plover. forehead white bill black, thick, stout gony's? or optical illusion dark line between eye and bill tarsi dull pink [tarsi seemed proportionally longer than in Semipalmated Plover] brown outer gray-brown area behind eye gray-brown back and wings brown, about same color as Semipalmated Plover pale areas in primaries - molt or wear [details of tail not noted - not flushed] dark brown breastband, narrowest in middle of breast and broadening at sides of breast On the basis of back color alone, Piping and Snowy Plover can be eliminated - much too dark - about same darkness as Semipalmated Plover. The bill was an order of magnitude too large for Semipalmated Plover giving the bird an entirely different profile and gestalt - whereas the Semipalmated looks very round-headed and stumpy-billed, this bird looked long-headed and long-billed. In addition, the overall body size was noticeably larger than that of the nearby Semipalmated.
