Dec.10 Benicia State Park, Solano Co., Calif: I flushed by line of birders going through the marsh opposite the parking lot at high tide (+6.9); it was then surrounded by a small circle and one person began to stomp down vegetation within the circle. It was not seen - but had been stomped on and apparently squashed into submerged vegetation out no one realized what had happened - assumed the bird had somehow slipped through the circle. Jeri Langham and I stayed in the area and ~ 5 minutes later Jeri spotted the upper half of the bird struggling through the vegetation to get above water. The bird was picked up, placed on a board, where it died ~ 45 minutes later - apparently had been squashed and had internal injuries.
