Remsen, J.V. 1977 Rough-legged Hawk Buteo lagopus Nov.19 Bolinas Lagoon, Marin Co., Calif: 1 (ad.) ~ 1 mi. N.of lagoon on Hwy 1 - tail band broken into smaller bands, no belly band, upper chest streaked. Pt. Reyes, Marin Co., Calif: 4 Nov.25 San Bernardino Mountains, San Bernardino Co., Calif: 3 - 2 at Baldwin Lake, 1 at Big Bear Lake. The latter was a very atypical bird - upperparts were mostly brownish like Red-tail; upperside of tail was all brownish as in young Red-tail - only a little white flecking at base of tail; underside of tail was whitish - no dark terminal band; underparts were mottled and streaked brownish; underwings were brownish but with whitish areas in bases of primaries which contrasted strongly with striking black wrist marks. It was identified as this species mainly on shape and proportions - long, rectangular wings, long tail, small head with very small bill - studied for 5 minutes at close range from below.
