Remsen, J.V. 1977 Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula Oct. 29 Lake Merritt, Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif: 2 at Embarcadero end of the lake (found here yesterday). One appeared to be a full adult male - body plumage all glossy black except for whitish sides. The sides were lightly mottled with brown, but there was no indication of a bright white crescent bordering chest contrasting with grayer sides as in Ring-necked Duck; tht white on the sides was a clean white, not gray. A conspicuous tuft of feathers stood out on the back of the head, visible even when head tucked while sleeping. The iris was a conspicuous orange-yellow. The second bird seemed to be an immature male - body plumage all dark brown, darker blackish-brown on head. The sides were brownish mottled with white - the impression was that the sides were on their way to becoming white. This bird also had a tuft on the back of the head but it was not as conspicuous as on the other bird. The iris was bright yellowish. The bill nail was conspicuous and broad, covering the entire leading edge of the bill. Nov. 9 Lake Merritt: 2 (both birds still present)
