Remsen, J.N. 1977 American Anhinga Anhinga anhings Apr.1 Sweetwater Reservoir, San Diego Co., Calif.: 1? seen in low flooded willows at the extreme east end of the reservoir where it had been found in early Feb. for the first documented Californian record. The bird spent the entire time perched at the water's edge and we were able to study it for 20+ minutes - pale buffy brown throat and breast sharply demarcated from blackish belly - neck, back and wings mostly blackish with pale areas on upper wing coverts - extremely thin neck and bill - long graduated tail Size of Double-crested Cormorant but more slender. The very thin neck and thin, pointed (not hooked) bill eliminates young cormorants, as well as the long, broad tail, pale areas in wing coverts, and very sharp border between breast and belly color.
