Manx Shearwater
Puffinus puffinus
Sept. 11 Monterey Bay boat trip, Monterey Co., Calif.: 1 - rare in Monterey Bay
Oct. 12 Monterey Bay boat trip: 1 -
Nov. 6 Monterey area: 2 seen from shore, 1 at Pt. Pinos and one outside Monterey Harbor — small, very dark above, very white below, very rapid wingbeat.
Nov. 13 Monterey area: 112 counted from Pt. Pinos in 13/4 hrs. — almost all moving west, close inshore, mostly singles or groups of 2-3 but one burst of about 8 birds. The small size, quick, rapid wingbeat, mostly black upperparts, dusky face and sides of breast, clean white underparts, and dark vent area could be seen clearly. This is the largest number of this species reported in northern California for decades, although 111 were counted yesterday at Pigeon Point by Barry Sauppe (we stayed long enough to top that — a longer stay would have yielded more birds).
