P. De Benedicts 1965 Larus hyperboreus June 8 Barrow Alaska - saw 5 sitting on the pack ice near the west end of camp near the beach line, 4 Ad + 1, 2nd year. 3 more flying about farther out. June 9. several birds sitting out in the exposed tundra near South Area should ATB radar installation. about 4/5 were adults and the youngest were 2nd year. largest group was 12-15 together. Very social + not much if any aggressive behavior. June 10 2 birds were seen flying over ARK and not more than 5 birds were seen out on the tundra in the Meadow hakes - Woldeddag Slough area; they were singles often with groups of Pomarine Jaegers, mostly adults. June 12 Still a few [illegible] on the SOUTH Area and along the pack ice N of Family Lagoon. Saw only 3rd / 3rd year birds, the rest adults. One bird, subadult had much gray like the mantle forming a band across the tail tip and some gray out towards the wing tip, which I take to be towards the bird called "L. melonii." Birds very social + non aggressive. June 14 There are several large group (10-20 birds) located along the shore of Elson Lagoon and a number of others were seen in with groups of Pomarine Jaegers. The birds as above are very social and show little display behavior. Saw one catch a lemming. June 15 saw eagle catch a lemming. June 17 a group of about 15 in S. Salt Lagoon. June 20 a few molting irides primary, secondaries.
