19 June Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25" W, 70°24' W, Alaska
Shortly before the nest incident, the Parastic and a L-T.
Jaeger were seen fighting over the plot.
21 June A pair on the census plot all day. They hunt
very unlike Parasitic Jaegers. Flying a short distance
- 30 feet or so - then hover 1-2 seconds like a
big kestrel, and dropping down for something,
and dipping and then going an 80° feet and
hovering again. They are getting something from
the ground - adult hybrids? which are out now.
and may be looking for bird nests. When the local
parasitic takes the Pectoral eggs at 11 AM, a ♀
L-T. chased it away, and then the 2 came
up and flew along the 1 row with a very deep
loose wing beat calling "Kraa" at each steal.
The two were on a near the plot all day but
are clearly not now nesting.
22-25 Occasional birds in evidence. No signs of web
26 June One Dimitry Kestrel cube on the census plot
28 June Two along Sweet Ridge, Dimitry in the
upland area and resting on its ground. No
territorial flights.
29 June A pair present along village creek chased
a parasitic, then another L-T. Jaeger out of
the area, and gave a poor territorial flight.
A bird to the NW of there also gave a brief
territorial flight. Not seen else where, and
none sitting yet. Territorial patrol not seen.
