Lemmus trimucronatus
4 July Barrow, Alaska - one was seen out in Vottl slough, giving
a muffled squeak and digging in a pile of cuttings: on
closer inspection a 2nd lemming was seen in the pile. The
animal digging in appeared to be a 3rd and it would dig
in until the face of the buried lemming, was exposed. Then
ran around to the back of the animal and began to dig
again. At the same time the 2nd lemming would turn
around in its grass pile so that the two always ended
up facing each other. This kept up for 2-3 minutes,
then the 3rd quit and ran off down a runway. Then
did not seem to be any change in #s seen any of the
area covered today.
5 July A few were seen well out in Central Marsh and they
are well maintained runways in other parts of
the marsh that are drier. They are probably not too
common due as they are in higher places.
6 July There seem to be about as many along the shore of
Elson Lagoon as any other, but there seemed to be very few
in Holmes' Marsh and Central Marsh although some
runways were well maintained and a few of the
burrows were seen.
12 July lemmings seem to be about as common around
I know with as close in the station.
Very little change in #s after this time
no young seen to at least 29 July.
