20 June Mleacle River Coal Mine, 157°25'25", 70°24'N, Alaska
Birds near Camp finally really coming, down to feed.
Heard them near the village also. Two feeding near
the coal mine on a sandy flat. When approached
they are quiet. A f? probably by plumage, the 3
brighter and clearer marked than the 4, and shown,
here when they get close together. Later a 3rd
appeared and the 7 closed it for several minutes.
Singing here heard in the willows directly across
the mine.
21 June 5h71 around the mine, and across the river.
and much singing. 3 birds seen together.
Evidently this is a late breeder.
25 June A 4 collected had a well developed (but poorly
calcified) brood patch, but was long away from
laying any eggs. No sign of regurgit or pellets.
The crop contained several small [illegible] slightly hairy diptera,
larvae, ? gleaned from the mud under the willows along
the river, when they are feeding. The 8's singing loudly.
but the group seen - 5+6 - was quite social. The
bird collected was a dark bird with streaked
upper tail coverts, nearly plain lower tail coverts, and
strong flank streaking. Theirs were much clearer, lest
the one it "shot" flew off when I picked it up.
26 June Occasional near the coal mine and across the
river. 8's singing loudly now. They have a odd
raucous buzzy phase which I have not heard from
recipalls before - but they are 15 breeding birds I have seen.
