P.D. Benedict 1965 Plectrophanes nivalis 15 June Barrow Alaska. Saw 2 hids together fight "tooth & claw"; one pulling on wing feathers of the other and the two tumbling on the ground and low off the ground for several seconds. When they separated they resolved into a ? which chased an extra ? away. They were silent saw a pair investigating a hole in an old oil drum and have seen this on several additional days; The song is itself reminiscent of a Geospiza and the calls include a longspun like rattles and a throats "fews". 18 June Saw a male and a ? fighting near the hab in the morning and still many birds apparently investigating nest sites. 19 June Saw one fight and a male with a large ? insect in its beak, which it appeared to eat. 20 June Saw of carrying wet, muddy grass blade to a beat up old can along a road, into which the took and deposited the grass. Saw two sexual fights and the ?s are very vocal. 22 June The nest in the case is increasing in size, now a well defined but unlined cup. No unusual behavior noted - just song and occasional fights between members of pair. 25 June a ? landed on a old oil drum near a ? and went into a bag posture, but was ignored by the male.
