Calcanis lopponicus - 4 2 June Sweet Meadow River Coal Mine, 15°025'W, 70°029'N, Alaska Little change in the PM. Saw several long fights between birds near the village. The two would face each other, then fly up 1-3 feet, feet at each other and both trying to peck the other on the head. Lots of song from individual males, most nest birds are quiet. They have one note that sounds a lot like the call of a Boreal Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus). 3 June Birds still active near the village but quiet near camp. Some song and a few 30+ fights seen. Little evidence of flocking. In the evening worked along the Meadow S of Camp. These birds are less local and more social. Several groups of 6-8 birds were seen and no fights. Flush birds from close at hand frequently but move act like they are meeting. Hang out on the snow where the polygon ridges are being exposed. 4 June No change from before by the village. Lots of song, and a few fights. Birds breeding was dispersed as the melt progresses. 5 June Only 3-4 pairs on the 30+ acre census plot and this seems to be a chance Triassic density except at the village where they are much more common. Song began about 2 AM and was essentially done by 4 AM south of camp. Saw a 9 soliciting but the Boreo not interested. None carrying nest material yet.
