Motacilla flava
29 May Micaule River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°39'N, Alaska
Found two birds feeding "with longbeaks" on
exposed [illegible] bare chickweed-Dryas-?Poa flats
along the creek. They were very active, walking
along through the vegetation picking up food items
and then flying to another patch. Their soft call
notes are very pipit-like, but the [illegible] is distinctive.
Later saw one in camp and Francis Kirstner saw
two near the CO2 shack, but couldn't find any
after 8 P.M. quarter down along the ridge.
30 May One in camp about 8:15, one feeding in
exposed rather bare sandy-Dryas flats near the
village, and one flying S along the Head in the
A.M. one or two heard over camp in the afternoon,
and one seen near camp about 11:30 P.M. flying
S along the river.
31 May At least 3 to 5 birds are present and two are
singing notes near the AF Wannigan. They are
very shy and fly off when I try to stalk them.
They tend to feed out in very exposed areas and
often fly up at the ground. The song is a
high-pitched rapidly repeated "seeee" given in the
air, 30 feet from the ground, the bird quickly to
the ground, wincing in a dihedral and feet dangling
at the close of each beat of song. They are all
over the camp area, and a frustrating bird to
try and collect. A very dull bird came through camp,
feeding at the edge of snow and flying up from the
