P. De Benedictis 1965 Nyctea scandica 9 July Barrow, Alaska - continuation of the Beach ridge Family lagoon and there were 6-9 birds around Foot print lake. There are a lot of owls around here! Owls were much more active in the evening than during the day. 10 July The group along Elson lagoon is smaller now; only about 20 ± 5 birds. The Brent Pt. nest contains 3 chick + 3 eggs. 11 July Didn't notice as many around Foot print as on July 9 (but not so careful attention paid). A nest with 7 young (two left the bowl when disturbed) was found along the stream channel at the SW part of Kroavik and a nest with 6 young about ½ mile from here. The 3 at the 7 owl nest bombed once twice ineffectually. One of the young off the nest snapped its beak at us + went into a "dracula"-like posture when approached; Only the 6 owl nest continued humming. 3 in the bowl. A pair at an unclarked nest along the E side of a large lake W of Kroavik were the only other owls seen. 16 July about 20 ± 5 along Elson lagoon. The Brent Pt. nest not chucked but am told now 6+ young. 19 July The nest by 12 Headman Lake well along. 4 young, all large, 3 are still downy, 1 has fairly long feathers and I can almost fly (bob-tailed). 20 July Found a egg on the ground outside Pitkha's owl nest but no young. The 9s still in the area. The Brent Point nest contains 6 young and all well groomed but and 7-8 Lemmings
