P. De Benedittis 1965 Nyctea scandiaca 17 June Barrow, Alaska - 7 birds were seen at one time in the area between Family Lagoon & the SE South end of S. Salt Lagoon, 58°3' and 24°; none of these appear to be nesting, and no courtship activity was seen. 19 June didn't notice as many owls in the above area today, but not as careful attention was paid to the species. 20 June a P catching a lemming merely flew 7-8 feet and flopped down on the beast and began to eat it. Still a few unattacked birds in the VOTD-Britton area, probably only 3 or 4 P's and 24s now. 22 June The area along Elson Lagoon is obviously a 2nd center for non-breeding P's or we saw 5 on one mound and 3 others nearby. Host are P's. Still 4-6 in Britton's area. 23 June a very white P seen in the distant Barrow area and a P4 seen out toward the SE end Family Lagoon in a high polygon area. 24 June On the mound where there were 5 owls June 22 Today there were 14!!!! The mound is oblong and about 100 feet long; P's out numbered Ps by about 2:1. There were two others on the ice and 3 across Woldsebølg Stream for a total of 19 non-breeders + 2+ pairs in the area. Only saw one owl near the Miconel shark and there is a 4 egg nest on P. Itelka's census plot, plus a P4 (couldn't find a nest) south of them.
