20-21 June Meadee River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska
Occasional lone to groups of 5 birds flying
over the census plot area and along the river.
One seen in the evening flying over the diner 4 mi.
A death of camp stopped over every puddle to
fish without even trying for anything.
23 June Feeding on the shallow lake cum of becks
Agassiz but not going after food often. None
seen on the ground - ? nesting here,? yet.
24 June One seen feeding in Sassy pools only 4-5" deep
on the census plot. It moved 6-10 feet up, then
dipped to water and up again. Whatever it was
often was small, because the only thing I saw was
a 4" piece of carrion steak in its bill. ? after
emerging tipulids.
25 June Two birds over one of the larger mossy
lakes opp. the North dunes regularly attract
2 Glaciarous gulls in this area, but the terns
did not land anywhere,
26 June One hovering over pools on the census plot felt
not seen to pick.
27 June Three birds hovering over the large lakes in 30
feet opposite camp.
28 June Chewing a [illegible] Paecotic Jaeger, q.v., on Agassiz.
29 June Scattered birds seen feeding on and near
most of the lakes inland of here but no evidence
of nesting.
3 July One "fishing" in the pools on the census plot.
