Sterna paradisea 3 June Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska One seen flying over the village in the AM. Tern-like calls heard through the fog on several occasions. 4 June One seen flying along the Meade about 10 A.M. 6 June Two or three seen flying along the Meade River. 7 June Seen along the river. 8 June Against 8 resting on the ice and 3-5 fishing on the pool on the Meade R. N of the ice jam. Fairly noisy. With Sabine Gulls. 9 June They have moved off the pond on the Meade R and were over Carey marshes at the village flats and seen flying inland near Iknakmak lake. Don't seem to be getting much. Calls "Keww" or "kip kip kip", Small groups - 1-6, flying SE with Sabine Gulls, 8 to 10 P.M., after well inland of the river. Quiet. 10-14 June Birds beginning to move out on the tundra when they are seen flying about in small # and ? fogging over the small ponds. Noisy but little display in evidence. They are ignored by jaegers. 12 June Two on a spongy mound in Lake Agassiz and small groups flying over and fishing in the open water during most of its afternoon. 16 June Much courtship on lake Agassiz and fishing on the lake and nearby shallows. More opponents fighting. 17 June Little change. Feeding in some very shallow (3") pools.
