10 June Meade River Coal Mine, 15°02'N, 78°29'W, Alaska
A few in flight in the South Ridge area, often
well inland of the river. 4 on a lake with some
water on top of the ice (not display saw).
Very vocal as they go by. ? Not around here.
12 June Two or 3 on Lake Agassiz, swimming, and
some seen flying over land. Not as noisy as usual.
16 June Now definitely sitting on eggs on the largest island
of lake Agassiz. Our flew up to attack a parent
Taeag going over, then directly back to the nest.
Only dunlin and Arctic Tern on the island otherwise.
17 June Still sitting at least 4's nesting, little display
saw though not much watched for.
21 June Only occasionally seen on the census plot area,
always flying from the lake Agassiz basin to
the river E. or vice-versa and never landing.
23 June Still sitting on the island on the SW part of
lake Agassiz.
27 June An ?incipient colony of 3 pairs forming in
one of the large lakes in the far opposite
camp. The birds were seen catching insects on
the ice and one hawked an insect from the air.
One landed on a sparsely sphagnum island
and in a slight upright posture scolded
"tsch tsch tsch..." for several minutes, then
flew off. None sitting. Associated with Arctic
Terns as usual.
29 June Only noted once away from lake Agassiz, and only briefly.
