31 May Heade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska
A breeding plumage adult flew east our camp
about 11 A.M.
2 June A adult seen clearly at 11 P.M. and possibly
another seen about 2 hrs earlier, both in flight.
4 June Two flew over camp about noon.
5 June Several Scaled group - 4 to 2 - seen flying again
in the AS. and two on a sand pair in the River.
One seen about + noon and one about 4, flying along the
river.
6 June Becoming quite conspicuous, and the calls,
intermediated between Bonaparte's gull and Arctic Tern
heard after dusk of this day. Birds flying over and
occ. landing on the rivers, in small groups, no
more than 8 together at one time. All seen have been
adults in good plumage.
7 June A few seen flying along the village in the evening
as the river broke up.
8 June 34 near the edge of the water and over the tundra
Sof camp in the afternoon. One resting on the ice,
about 8 resting on the ice with Arctic Terns near
the pool N of the ice gain in the evening.
9 June Finally saw several migrating SE with
Arctic Terns in the evening, 5 to 10. Small bore
flakes, 1647 occ. with Terns. No very noisy. Occ.
stopping to check something on the tundra but
not landing.
