+ Barker : Redhead 6
Feb. 19 E. Mojave Desert
Area: drove from Barker to Kelso to Cottonwood Wash at NE side of Granite Mtns; hiked to Cottonwood Spring and then 3/4 way to summit of north face of Granites and then west along the 4800-5200 level about 1/2 mile and then down to Cottonwood Wash again.
The north side of the Granites are not only very picturesque with their huge rounded boulders, but are more mesic than any other area I've seen in the Planning Unit. There are lots of shrubs all over the mountain side, many of which were unfamiliar to me. There were perhaps 10 20-30' high Q chrysolepis at various points, especially in a canyon about 1/2 mi. W. of Cottonwood Seg. which also had 50 yds. of dense low willows and scattered willow thickets further down the canyon. This particular canyon also had running water, but this is probably still runoff from rainstorms of a week or so ago. The presence of Rufous-sided Towhees was indicative of the mesic character of this slope. Time: 0750-1500 Wind: 2-50 W (high winds and dust storm after 1330) Sky: clear but smoggy AM Temp: 55-65
