The area is beautiful scenery with the entire landscape covered by picturesque rounded boulders, steep cliffs and canyons. The higher parts of the hills have occasional scattered pinyons and a few small junipers; in between boulders are scattered evergreen shrubs, including manzanita and gifts. We found one creek which had apparently permanently flowing water, since there were several tall deciduous trees (including at least two cottonwoods) and a small, dense willow thicket. Most permanent residents of California chaparral were present except Wrenfrit (bushes perhaps too scattered) and Plain Titmouse (absence unexplainable); Rufous-sided Towhee Ed Wessman most of the chaparral species were first records for Imperial Co.
