Dec, 30 Eastern Mohave Desert, San Bernardino Co. Calif
Area: Census Plots (Balter creosote-burrobrush, Ivaneah creosote-yucca-cholla,
Clivia Joshua tree) + Cima and Mescal Spring (near Hard Rock Queen
Spring in Mescal Range) and canyon at end of Colorado Copper Mine Rd. Mescal
Spring has a small, clear-water, overflowing cattle tank and a small natural
pool 100 m up the gully which is 1 x 2 m in size; there are several 10-1/2
mesquite and lots of big Acacia, but little birdlife was seen; lots of
rubble and trash indicating much human disturbance. The canyon at the
north end of the Mescals was richly vegetated with Acacia, cholla, yucca, etc,
but had no water or birds. Mescal Spring does not show on a Topo Map
but is at the end of the other fork in the dirt road on which Hard Rock
Queen Spring is located. Time: 0800-1700 Temp: 40-60.
