American Brant
Branta bernicla
Dec. 20 San Diego area, San Diego Co., Calif.; 1 ad. with 100 Black Brant on Silver Strand near Amphibious Base where it was found by Guy McCaskie a week earlier. Like a Black Brant except neck markings restricted to sides of neck and darkness on belly restricted to breast, where sharply delineated from paler belly. This was clearly seen when all the birds were walking along the shore of the bay. The bird was actually picked up when they were facing directly away — the Black Brant showed dark color between the legs whereas the American did not.
