Golden-crowned Sparrow
Zonotrichia atricapilla
Jan. 1 Waterton, Jefferson Co., Colo : 1 in ad. plumage - strong
black crown stripes with gold crown - seen along the e. bank of
the S. Platte R. about 1/4 mile downstream from the bridge. Along
the e. bank, there are several springs which probably do not freeze,
and the bird was seen on the ground around the wet areas. Did
not associate with any other sparrows and spent most of its time
in dense thickets. The bird had been found here 5 days earlier by
Bob Reed. It seemed strange that the bird was a fine plumaged ad.
instead of an imm. Only a few Colorado records
