Rusty Blackbird
Euphagus carolinus
Jan.4 Monterey area, Monterey Co., Calif: I seen at the Carmel Sewage Treatment plant near the Carmel Rivermouth where it had been found at the end of December. Very rusty brown crown, nape, and back, becoming grayish on lower back; pale brownish eye-line above white (not gold) eye; underparts uniform grayish. Call note - a Red-wing-like "chuck". Fed alone, along edges of sewage ponds. Tail seemed shorter than Brewers, and bill relatively smaller.
