Remsen, J.V. 1975 Couels Flycatcher Contopus pertinax dec. 25 Santa Cruz area, Santa Cruz Co., Calif: I in campground at New Brighton State Park where it had been found a couple of weeks ago by Eugene Marshining but not seen for at least a week. I found it in the campground at about campsite A-16 where I located it by call high in Eucalyptus trees. The call, a double "fweep-fweep" is very similar to a three-noted call given by Olive-sided Flycatcher. This similarity, plus obvious behavioral similarities (sitting in exposed branches in tall trees; sallying long distances), plus similarity in song quality (this bird gave its "Joze Mario" song 10+ times in 1 3/4 hrs), make it obvious to me that they are in the same genus. The "fweep-fweep" call was given consistently while foraging, and occasionally was amplified after returning from a sally. I watched this bird for 1 3/4 hrs (waiting for Robersons to arrive) as it moved through tops of Eucalyptus trees 100-150 ft above ground while foraging; during silent rest periods, it would pick a lower, less exposed perch (affording much better views). It almost always selected leafless branches for hunting perches. It finally moved out of sight near a parking lot on Potbelly Dr. south of the campground. The upperparts were a medium olive brown, appearing paler, especially on the head, than Olive-sided Flycatcher; there were two pale wingbars and some pale edging on the greater secondary coverts; the tail was brown, slightly forked with slightly rounded corners; the face and crown were about the same color as the back - not noticeably darker; the head was conspicuously pointed; the upper mandible was dark, the lower conspicuous orang; iris dark; the chin, throat, breast, belly, and undertail coverts were an even, uniform olive-brownish, only slightly pale than upperparts; in the center of the belly was a narrow, buffy
