Eastern Phoebe
Sayornis phoebe
Jan. 10 Los Angeles County Arboretum, Los Angeles Co., Calif: I seen which
had apparently been present for at least a week or two. A
W. Wood Pewee-sized flycatcher with very dark brown wings, back, head
and face, contrasting strongly with very white throat and chest (some
dark on sides of chest) with pale belly, faintly tinged yellow.
No wing-bars or eye-ring. Wagging tail. Watched for 5 minutes
to within 30 feet.
May 3 Carizzo + Cottonwood Creeks, Baca Co., Calif: 2 pairs found along
stream bottoms with flowing water. It seemed very strange to see them
in this near-desert habitat - Black Phoebe would be much more
appropriate.
Nov. 2 Monterey area Monterey Co., Calif: 1 in Carmel River bed near sewage
treatment plant. Very dark brown upperparts, including cap and face extending
below eye giving strong contrast between dark upperparts and white
underparts with only a tinge of darkness on sides of breast; wagged tail.
Only seen for about 10 seconds, but Binford, Bolander, and Parmeter all
saw it and confirmed ID.
Dec. 4 Kelso, San Bernardino Co., Calif: 1 at the water-tower at NE end of town.
Very dark brown upperparts, especially head and face which contrasted with slightly
paler back and pure white throat; face dark to below eye; underparts
mostly whitish with some brownish on upper part of sides of breast, and tinge
of yellowish on vent; 2 faint wing-bars; consistently wagging its tail;
jerky phoebe flight; seen well several times from as close as 40'.
